Here's why in Kilifi County there's no terrorism

15 years ago last attack, project and prevention by institutions

08-05-2017 by Freddie del Curatolo

It was recently presented by the Kenya Government in collaboration with the County of Kilifi, an important dossier on the fight against the radicalization of Islamic matrix of young people in Kilifi County.
The action plan that is going on and begins to deliver its results is carried out with the help of the Taita and Taveta University and the British Embassy, as well as with the collaboration of special police, entities and associations.
However, as Governor Amason Kingi points out in the introduction of the document, it is no coincidence that the last terrorist incident in Kilifi County occurred in Kikambala, practically at the border with Mombasa (at that time there was not yet the subdivision into counties given by the devolution) in November 2002.
Since then, despite the many alarms given by the Foreign Ministries of the Western States and, above all, by mostly Italian media, Malindi, Watamu, Kilifi and the surrounding area, there has been no other episode of Islamic-Radical matrix violence.
This does not mean that the threat is not, at least in part, present.
In this, the coastal region of Kenya does not deviate from the rest of the world. Where there is an important presence of the Muslim community (and although the present in Kenya represents the moderate wing of Islam) there is always the risk of extremism, especially with the proximity of a bad example, such as Somalia His cell named Al Shabaab, or "youth".
And just about young people and how to keep them safe from the flattery of radicalization, we talk about this enlightening dossier.
To date, according to estimates of the socio-economic report contained in the document, young people living in the county are just under 400,000 (393,385 at the beginning of 2017, to be exact). Less than half (42.5%) are engaged in secondary schools (with a light majority of boys).
But only 30% of non-students, according to the statistics, have a job, an employment among others often not fixed.
It follows that a young man out of three is "walking" and that fifty thousand male boys live in extreme poverty or expediency.
Here is where it can draw radicalism, who wants to enlist.
And it is here that the program dictated by this "Action Plan" has begun to act, mapping zone per zone to every village and town districts.
An imaginary, disturbing picture emerges, but also before the risks of cultivating small terrorists as snakes, for the social situation of the new generations in general. The most present problem, for example, is the use of narcotics and alcohol.
Among the goals the action plan is pursuing is the creation of neighborhood or village communities that are associated with law enforcement and constitute the first warning against local unsuccessful characters or habits that change and proliferate in young people.
An idea matured on the basis of a system called "Nyumba kumi" (ten houses) that is operating in difficult and Islamic majority areas such as Shela to Malindi.
But it is not just about prevention, there are also strategic goals that involve young people's involvement in art and culture, technology and easier access to education. Although the battle of ever, the hardest to grind, is that of poverty.
