PREVENTION

Hygiene and social distances, Malindi is working

Institutions, Red Cross and Pwam together for the emergency

02-04-2020 by Leni Frau

Kilifi County is among the regions of Kenya that were the first to take action to prevent Coronavirus contractions in Kenya. Perhaps the wake-up call was the positivity of Vice Governor Gideon Saburi, who directly alarmed the entire county government apparatus, including its leader, Amason Kingi, who put himself in solitary confinement for 14 days.
In a few days, he and staff members who have had dealings with Saburi will be tested and can return to work, while managers of the Health, Transportation and Trade departments are working hard on prevention. Currently only 7 cases have been registered, all connected to Kilifi's "patient one", but checks on all contacts and controlled self-isolation measures continue.
For days, thanks also to donations from individuals and organizations such as the Progress Welfare Malindi Association, a large-scale pest control work has begun in Malindi and Watamu coordinated by the Ministry of Health which has seen about twenty volunteers in the field.
The work in this case is double and aimed at the categories of traders who cannot give up their earnings and at the same time supply the towns with basic necessities such as vegetables. In the markets of Malindi, Gede, Timboni and Watamu every 48 hours is disinfected, but since yesterday a new initiative has started, that of delimiting on the streets and public spaces the distance to be kept in front of shops, public offices and activities that usually call to the gathering.
The Red Cross of Malindi with the health task force coordinated by Dr. Sultan works day and night to raise awareness through actions and facts. It is the best way to show not only that something is being done, but that it is being done with respect for the citizens and the importance of containing what must be experienced as a threat to the Kenyan people, and also to the poor people who usually worry about ending the day with a meal and a little more. Now is the time to think longer, to prevent the spread of the virus from causing damage that is difficult to absorb in a short period of time. Day after day, thanks to initiatives like these and the commitment of institutions, volunteers and responsible citizens gathered in groups, we can act on people's awareness and improve the conditions to avoid the spread of the virus as much as possible, considering the difficulty of people from the coast to stay at home. The focus should be on hygiene and social distance.
