Meeting for emergency in Malindi: how to help

Red Cross and KNCCI Malindi called for collaboration

28-03-2020 by Sabina Vivaldi

The objective of the meeting called by the Director of the Chamber of Commerce Majid Swaleh in collaboration with the International Red Cross of Malindi and the Malindi Sub County Medical Officer of Health and Team Leader of the COVID-19 Task Force Response Team, Dr. Sultan, was to take stock of the situation in prevention against Covid-19 in Malindi.

Ours is among the 5 most affected counties and for the last 3 weeks has set up a control and prevention system organized with a "Response Team" that takes care of emergency calls and coordinates the operations of the following teams:

The Community Sensitization Team is responsible for informing the most remote villages of the problem and implementing preventive measures to punish those who do not respect certain rules.
The Hospitality Team is in charge of informing the rules to welcome guests, to educate/protect the staff and how to deal with suspicious cases.
The Transport Team is in charge of informing the associations and the bag of all means of transport of how to implement preventive measures
The Facilities Base Team is responsible for informing and supporting organizational structures such as communities, businesses, offices and various services.
The Response Team has put in place a regular (every 24/48 hours depending on the area) disinfestation with disintegrating agents (Rufect seems to have been identified as the best bactericide and at the same time takes into account the health of the volunteers involved in the disinfestation operations) of areas such as: bus stations, parking and waiting areas, police station, police vehicles, public offices and meeting room of the municipality, offices sacco matatu, market areas, streets where there are stalls of street vendors (mitumba areas), boda boda station, drinking water distribution areas, villages, numerous hotels and shops that have requested the service.

The Response Team in collaboration with the Red Cross informs us that at the moment we need help to: print information material, to produce masks, to buy Rufect disinfectant to maintain the periodicity of pest control, 2 Pick up vehicles to load the two pest control machines, 2 non-manual automated pumps for pest control, EPP gowns for volunteers dealing with pest control, milk and drinking water for volunteers, funds to support training courses on prevention standards.

A team of volunteers has been created to delimit with yellow paint the safety distance to be respected between sellers and buyers at the market.

During the assembly, aid was collected for the above and many have already offered themselves from the well-known Kassamjee and Raghib Store hardwares and other activities and responsible citizens such as Ocean Beach Resort, 7to7 Supermarket, Malindi Total Petrol Station, Hamza, Mustafa Jewellers, Standard Bank, Olimpia Club, Mwembe Resort and private individuals who are adding from hour to hour.
Any further support is highly appreciated through:

wire transfer to KEPI (Kenya Expanded Program of Immunization) Malindi District Standard Bank No. 0102026576900
Weight: Paybill Red Cross 920690
goods to help the volunteers such as milk, drinking water, bread crates, soap for washing hands, masks, can be taken directly to the collection centre at the Red Cross in Malindi.
Those who live in Malindi realize that many of these measures are still not respected and that even in front of the security officers many people take it under their thumb or believe it is a government hoax to get money but the Task Force is doing everything possible without intervening with drastic or violent punitive measures as they are doing in other countries.
But we have been warned to be prepared for this if the government's restrictive measures are not respected.
