Situation about international flights reopening

1 august still on, but travel sector needs guidelines

28-07-2020 by redazione

Many expected President Kenyatta, in yesterday's speech just after the meeting with his ministers and county governors, to confirm whether or not international air traffic would resume next Saturday, August 1.
Instead, the Kenyan Head of State gave priority to the decisions taken in the morning on lockdown. At the beginning of his speech he made it clear that the Government's priority was, in consultation with the county leaders, whether to lock down the country from within or continue with the soft line of keeping Nairobi open with Mombasa and the regions most at risk, which from the coast would now seem to be others, those on the border with Tanzania and Uganda and those adjacent to the capital itself.
Kenyatta concluded that although the situation is still at risk, that contagions continue to rise, thanks also to the low percentage of deaths, there is no need to bring the country's economic system and commercial network to its knees with new restrictions on movement.
At the same time, calling citizens to individual and collective responsibility and law enforcement agencies to tighter controls, Kenyatta has extended the curfew for another 30 days.
With Nairobi and Mombasa open, in short, the chances increase that the scheduled date of reopening of flights will not be cancelled and that from Saturday the airlines that want to resume coming and going from Kenya can do so.
At the same time remains the veto of the Ministry of Health on the removal of quarantine for those arriving from abroad, so to date, unless contraindications of the Ministry itself, or colleagues of Transport and Tourism, the situation is: international flights can be restored from Saturday, August 1, mandatory 14-day quarantine at home reported before departure for those arriving, Covid-19 Free certificate issued by the country of departure.
But even here the final guidelines have not yet been issued, which hopefully will arrive at any time: will serological analysis be enough? For travel and business appointments will special permits be available to avoid quarantine?
What is certain is that for real tourism the confirmation of the curfew, and the ban on alcohol consumption in public places is a big brake on holidays. The insecurity also Italian (for now there is quarantine even on return from African countries, as is happening for those who decide to go to Tanzania, which has reopened to tourism) does the rest.
It is likely that until the end of September Kenya will have to do without tourists and the hope is that everything will be ready and certain at least a month before the high season, that is from the end of October.
