CALL

We resist, but malindikenya.net still needs you

Here's why i'm asking a little help from the readers

09-09-2020 by Freddie del Curatolo

Honestly, after twelve years of daily commitment, I hoped I would never have to ask you readers for a hand.
As I think you know, even though I have been a professional journalist since 2002 and have been practicing this profession since long before, malindikenya.net does not receive any kind of subsidy from any institution or body. It simply goes on thanks to the sponsorship of Kenyan activities in the tourism sector and occasional advertisements related to its induced activities.
Since last March, earnings are reduced more or less to zero, but the commitment and time devoted to what I like to call "The portal of the Italians in Kenya" has even increased and with it the expenses "live" (internet, phones, gasoline, etc. ... in addition to the expenses of the company, permits, licenses, taxes and accountant, because in the face of low earnings, however, be in order as a foreigner in Kenya costicchia ...).
In the past years I have enjoyed for a certain period of time the support of a good number of activities.
From the 35/40 that paid, in 2008, 500 euros a year each, when everything began thanks to Renzo Quaciari, Bobby Cellini and Marco Vancini who had decided to pay me, since I am independent, the annual sponsors have slowly settled on 10/15 until reaching, in 2020, only 7.
Far from complaining, I continue to thank those who choose the portal to have visibility and reach about 6000 daily readers of the site (which reach 20 thousand when there are important news) but also because they appreciate my work.
Precisely for this reason I am also asking for help to those who may not have economic interests, but only emotional or want to keep updated on Kenya for other reasons.
If I had a store, a restaurant, in this period, as many have done, I would have closed its doors and I would have hibernated, waiting for better times.
But I can not and fortunately I have no employees, although I have a moral duty to carry on the social initiatives that with malindikenya.net I created, such as the soccer academy or scholarships for those who deserve it.
If I stopped, all the work done in twelve years would be lost, but without sin of presumption, I believe that it would also stop a valuable reference point for the Italian press agencies that often draw from the portal, for the social pages that gather more than 50 thousand followers and also for the local community that has always recognized our commitment to cohesion and growth of Malindi and Watamu in particular.
Malindikenya.net is in fact a full-time job and not only on the internet to be always informed, find sources and be "on the piece" in real time: you have to attend institutional meetings, press conferences, informal meetings, go to the field for photo reportage and lately also video, because this requires modern information and you have to keep up.
I also like to have as direct a relationship as possible with readers and those who have done so know that when you write to me for any information, advice or clarification, in times less than African I always reply. And I answer to everyone.
In short, it is not my intention to self-celebrate and I do not think I am indispensable even to myself, but I would like to be able to continue to offer those who read me a service that is always up to date even in this period, hoping to do so for as long as possible and achieve the economic recovery and tourism desired by all. Otherwise I will have to look for another job. In fact, a job because as Indro Montanelli said, "I'm a journalist, it's always better than working".
