Big heart of italians who helped "Asante Sana"

Euro 35k raised to rebuild the damaged Children Centre

31-01-2020 by Leni Frau

A great demonstration of solidarity of many Italians living in Malindi and Mambrui, but also of tourists who know the reality of Asante Sana Children Home and many who care about the fate of the 105 children who are permanent guests of the structure and the 200 pupils of the primary school who attend it every day and have a guaranteed meal.
After the fire that completely destroyed the women's dormitory on 29th December, "Mama" Piera Chiodi had launched a desperate cry for help to rebuild the wing of Asante Sana that had been reduced to ashes as soon as possible. Total damage for about 70 thousand euros, between construction (about 50 thousand) and interior furnishings. A huge amount with an urgent need: to give everyone back a bed as soon as possible. Malindikenya.net had amplified the emergency on its channels and also the broadcast of Italia Uno "Le Iene", already sensitive to the initiative of Asante Sana, had taken up our appeal. Well, after exactly one month after the tragedy, almost 35 thousand euros have been collected, which means that we are close to half of the amount needed to complete the work.
"Initially we were down - confirm Piera, Costantino and Valentina di Asante Sana - then we rolled up our sleeves, the priority was that the girls had a good accommodation in the shortest possible time. Our trusted builder was contacted and immediately started to demolish the parts that the fire had made unusable. He managed to save part of the old building, but all the interiors, floors, beds and furniture are totally burnt. Many friends came to visit us, others wrote, and the closeness of all pushed us to continue and overcome this trauma".
Thanks to the prompt response of the many Italians, what you see today in Asante Sana is a structure under construction, workers at work and materials ready to be laid. A truly incredible result.
"The reconstruction work began with the repair of the only two facades that remained standing, even if extremely damaged - confirms Costantino We also consolidated the entire structure by throwing a kerb of reinforced concrete".
The hope is that by the beginning of the second quarter, in May, the girls who have now been moved to the men's dormitory, while the boys have been temporarily moved to the Children Home offices, can return to their residence with new beds, mattresses, bathrooms and all the services they had before. "The generosity of everyone has been incredible," Asante Sana's managers conclude, "it has struck us to the heart. We know that many are still doing their best to allow us to finish the work. The children will be eternally grateful to those who have given them a new roof, a new bed and the possibility of continuing to study and grow to become aware men and women and be able to contribute to improving their society".
