Controls in Kenya bars open after 7pm

Restaurants ask to clarify last Presidential address

05-05-2021 by redazione

Two days of controls, on Sunday and Monday evening, following Kenyatta's order to reopen bars across the country but to strictly observe the 7 pm closing time.
From Nairobi to Mombasa and Malindi, bars that did not respect the opening hours were searched and managers and customers were taken to the police station and fined.
It is difficult to establish which premises can be defined as a "bar" or "restaurant", especially if they serve only drinks and alcohol. So for these two days, the interpretation of the law by the local police was that all establishments that also serve as bars must close at 7 p.m., as stated in the President's official statement of Saturday 1 May.
After requests for clarification from trade associations and private catering representatives, it is likely that today the Ministry of the Interior will confirm whether or not the rule will also be extended to restaurants and 'eateries', or confirm whether there will be any exceptions.
For now, representatives of the categories and ourselves, after consulting various institutional players, have advised our compatriots to close at 7pm yesterday, Tuesday 4 May, too. We hope to have updates later today.
