Enterprise Minister Urso in Nairobi and Malindi

Mission to Kenya between Mattei Plan and space base

30-09-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

The Italian Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, arrived in Kenya on Sunday evening for a two-day mission at the behest of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, during which, on Monday, he will hold summit meetings with Kenyan government officials and talk to Italian entrepreneurs in Nairobi, as part of the Italian Embassy in Kenya's initiative, ‘Il caffè delle imprese’. This is a significant presence for the trade sector represented in this country by many activities in various sectors, in light of the new import-export agreements between Kenya and the European Union and in view of other future innovations in the field of trade.
Lastly, Urso will be in Malindi on Tuesday, to visit the Luigi Broglio Space Centre, as already announced in recent weeks and planned for some time, after the various exchanges of visits to strengthen collaboration between Italy and Kenya in the field of space aeronautics. Together with the new Defence Minister, Sopyan Tuya, Urso will announce Italy's goal of cooperating with Kenya to revive the use of the base and expand its role.
‘Aerospace is one of the sectors of the future for Made in Italy,’ the minister wrote on his X profile, ’we have deployed significant resources to make our country a leader in this field and in the next few hours the process of the first national framework law on the space economy will begin in Parliament. Space is also one of the fundamental assets of the Mattei Plan. I myself, as the delegated authority for space, have been to the African continent several times in recent months to reach bilateral agreements through Asi Spazio with those countries that are beginning to enter the space sector. I will be in Kenya to assign a new mission to our ‘Luigi Broglio’ space base in Malindi, which just over 60 years ago marked Italy's entry into space. Thanks to the activities we have carried out, we can significantly reaffirm our all-round leadership with respect to this new developing economy'.
Urso announced that the base in Kenya can become a training and education centre for African countries, ‘with whom we can share the exciting challenge of space’.
