Italian tourists in Watamu: not this, please

Ignorance and total disrespect on display

21-07-2025 by Freddie del Curatolo

There is little to say: faced with certain images, such as the one captured by one of our readers in Watamu, one can only be stunned by how, in this age of global information, and consequently of easy access to suggestions, advice, rules and prohibitions before travelling to a foreign country, it is still possible to act in such a totally reckless and decidedly distasteful manner.
Of course, it is understandable that those who decide to holiday in Kenya, in one of its seaside tourist destinations, might think that it is a country of freedom, populated by savages who, until a century ago, went around half-naked, or that Kenyans are so poor that, in exchange for the honour of having tourists bring them prosperity, they can do whatever they want.
No, there is no point in dwelling on the reasons why an Italian woman, accompanied by a complacent beach boy, decided to parade through the town centre in a skimpy bikini.

We do not expect the lady, or her dim-witted companion, to have read one of the many articles offering advice and suggestions on how to behave on holiday, nor that they have watched the tutorials on our YouTube channel on the subject. Because really, all it would have taken was a modicum of intelligence, respect, civic sense and sensitivity.
Nothing, the equatorial sun has struck again.
In a region, the Kenyan coast, where a fifth of the population is Muslim (and in Watamu, the mosques, the buildings in the fishing village and the Friday attire are a reminder of this), where topless sunbathing is strictly forbidden on the beach and even public displays of affection are punishable by law, where there is a decided backwardness in attitudes, such that, for example, homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment, what do you do? Do you decide to stroll amiably with your big bum on public display?
It would be interesting to know where “culo al vento d'Africa” (bums in the African wind) is located, because I remember a time when tourist villages were very clear about the rules of conduct to be observed outside the all-inclusive shell, in the so-called arrival briefings. But today, there are countless bed & breakfasts and boutique hotels that give their guests complete freedom (a euphemism for “they don't give a damn”) and are often run by other Italians living in Kenya in defiance of many of the famous rules that should be respected.

Chiappa Allegra is just one of the phenomena we can expect in this new season, following anecdotes and situations (some of which ended up in police reports) involving fellow countrymen, including flirting in public places, smoking joints in nightclubs, arguments with motorcycle taxi drivers over requests for 50 shillings extra (30 euro cents) and racist comments.
Some believe that paying for a travel permit to come to Kenya (30 euros) is a kind of skimming that adds to the cost of air tickets and discourages tourists from choosing a holiday in Kenya. Personally, I would abolish visas for those who answer correctly to a mandatory questionnaire about where they are going and how they should behave.
It seems so long ago when a couple from Lombardy who had booked a week in a tourist village in Watamu, as soon as they landed at Mombasa airport, asked the tour operator to take them back immediately on the same flight. They were furious and wanted to sue the travel agency: no one had warned them that “they were all negroes” there.
