After two years of intense work, the Nairobi Expressway, the city's elevated expressway, will be open to the public before Easter 2022. The expressway will wind its way through the capital's business center, connecting Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the Westlands district, with several interchanges coinciding with the city's ring roads, the so-called bypasses and the busiest and most heavily trafficked districts, for a total of 27 kilometers.
Initially the end of the work, which began in June 2020, was scheduled for December 2021 but the pandemic has slightly delayed it.
From sources inside the Chinese company that built it, the green light for paid vehicle transit could even be given this Saturday, April 9.
The China Road and Bridge Corporation, which designed and managed the toll road construction sites, will manage and maintain the highway for the next 27 years, collecting revenue from the transit of cars and trucks.
In fact, motorists will pay the toll as in the Italian ring roads and the ticket will depend on the kilometric distance covered by the vehicle.
If you use the expressway from Westlands to Mlolongo, exit for the highway that goes to Mombasa, Ksh 300 will be deducted (or 300 points if you use the electronic means of payment). Same amount, obviously for the reduced route. For those who instead go directly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the payment will be Kshs. 260. For those who want to go from Westlands to the CBD the amount will be Kshs.100 and it is assumed that this will be the most used route, given the exponential traffic in that part of the city.
From Mlolongo to the SGR train station, the amount will be Kshs.100, while to go from Mlolongo to the Southern Bypass will have to pay Kshe. 210.
There are other exits, all with toll booths because payment will be made at the exit. The other routes are Wayaki Way-James Gichuru, National Museum, Haile Selassie-CBD.
