In small steps Kenya climbs up the slope among the least corrupt countries in the world, leaving behind it more or less a dozen or so every year and seeing others from its continent that years ago did not seem approachable. This reveals the annual report on corruption compiled by Transparency International.
The work of the Kenyatta government and the recent agreements with the opposition for transparency in view of the next elections, the suspension of ministers and undersecretaries, as well as governors and managers of nationalized companies, have gained positions for the African country that now no longer languishes in the slums of the ranking that includes 180 nations and that now sees for years as a taillight Somalia, which this year is joined by the penultimate South Sudan.
Kenya is "only" at position 137, in the company of Uganda, while other African countries precede it in the unpleasant ranking: Sudan, the two Guineas (Equatorial and Bissau), the Democratic Republic (only on paper) of Congo, the Central African Republic, Angola, recently affected by the great scandal of the President's daughter, Mozambique, Cameroon, Burundi, the Comoros and Madagascar.
Among the nations of East Africa, Rwanda and Tanzania are much better than Kenya.
Italy is 51st and worse than her in Europe only Greece and the nations of the East, such as Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and the Balkan area such as Croatia and Montenegro.
New Zealand and all the Scandinavian states (Denmark, Norveglia, Sweden and Finland), plus Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands lead the ranking. The only other non-European country in the "top ten", Singapore.
