Malindi's problems, between dumpsite and beaches

PWAM's battles for the environment, health and tourism

20-03-2025 by redazione

The situation of the Malindi dumpsite has become absolutely unbearable. It is no longer a battle of environmentalists, but a fight against damage to human health and to an entire ecosystem that is also intertwined with tourism and hospitality.
But first of all come the citizens, the poor people who live close to the open-air landfill of Mayungu.
PWAM is an association that, since its foundation six years ago, has been fighting to improve the situation at the site where all the waste from the town (and the surrounding area) ends up, and against those who illegally burn it. But instead of being moved, contained and monitored, the landfill is a haven for those who look for metals and then indiscriminately set fire to the waste, creating a toxic environment that, with the wind, ends up even in the homes in the Casuarina and Parco Marino area.
But that's not all. In an attempt to limit the damage, PWAM reports that other smaller landfills have sprung up in different areas of the town and that waste is also being thrown on the beach, threatening marine life and worsening the appearance of the tourist destination.
More and more often, as this month, PWAM's cleaning activity, which takes place every second Saturday of the month, is concentrated on the beach, both on the large beach of Malindi bay, from the Casino to the pier, and in Silversand, from Scorpio Villas to the Marine Park.
The rubbish dump and the beach are therefore two interconnected realities, as are the protection of the environment, tourism and above all the health of the people of Malindi. There are issues that are worth protesting about and making your voice heard. We continue to invite residents who have not yet done so to register with PWAM - Progress Welfare Association of Malindi.
