Malindi, a unique place in the world

The best word to decribe the kenyan coastal city

10-05-2013 by Freddie del Curatolo

A unique place in the world. It is certainly not a gamble to talk about Malindi in this way.
Often celebrated for what it is not, remembered for what it was and imagined for what it could be, in reality Malindi is exactly how it manages to appear: unique. Full of contradictions, immersed in nature, multi-ethnic, multi-religious, peaceful (and those who insist on saying the opposite should have the good faith and common sense to make comparisons with other realities so poor, to realize that here daily violence is at its lowest in the world) and in evolution. It would take so little to make it less desperate and it is precisely from that point of view that so many heartfelt people, with great and small means, are trying: health, education, integration.
Malindi, however, is also a tourist place, where interests converge and investments are made.
A place where you meet a sample of the human race that has few precedents.
But also among compatriots themselves, to see pensioners who have chosen it solely because of the climate and the low cost of the carer mixing with volunteers integrated in the local undergrowth, millionaires sipping drinks by the poolside to meet industrious penniless people who have opened a small business to make ends meet in the magic of Africa, Those who no longer want to return to the Belpaese and who, if they do not take the plane to Europe every three months, go crazy, it may seem surreal, but it is the most complete and up-to-date way to understand who we are (also because where we are going and why we are here we should know or at most ask someone in Swahili).
There are so many emails from Italians who keep asking for information to move here and we will never get tired of answering each one in person. However, we need a first approach with this place that doesn't even boast attempts at imitation, because they would be impossible. The advice is always to be able to afford a period of "acquaintance" of two or three weeks, to see Malindi not with the sweetening eyes of the tourist, but with the eyes of those who really want to understand if it could be the right place to move, to live, to invest not only on an economic level, but also on their future, on a possible new life. You can try it.
