Few tourist destinations in Africa have been as successful this year as Watamu. The rise of the 'pearl of the Indian Ocean', which since its reopening after the pandemic has been steady with international verve and since last year has seen a further increase in visitors thanks to the reopening of charter flights and the stakes of tour operators and investments in the hospitality sector, is unstoppable and judging by the bookings and forecasts of the Kenyan government, will contribute significantly to the increase in national tourism.
If one adds to the name gained and the popularity of all age groups, the fame gained nationally and by many travellers from neighbouring countries, Watamu is now a fixed point for choosing a holiday destination that combines the wonderful sea and white beaches of the Indian Ocean, with the beauty of nature, entertainment, good food and of course, the magic (and contradictions, of course) of Africa all around. With the usual added value that those who frequent it are familiar with and that puts it in direct competition with Zanzibar and a few other destinations, namely its proximity to the savannah, with the Tsavo East National Park just over an hour's off-road drive away. This is something that no other tourist destination is as developed, with dedicated facilities for holidays and entertainment. Among the 'secrets' of its success are the two cult venues for dancing and enjoying festivals and special evenings, Paparemo Beach and Licht House/Temple Point, the oceanfront veranda bar Ocean Sports and the many small bars, chiringuitos and local restaurants along the bays. As well as secluded beaches, Jacaranda Bay and the Mida Creek ecosystem.
Other unique features, for nature and animal lovers, are the serpentarium of the Bio Ken Farm, the turtles of the Local Ocean Conservation and, in general, the excursions from the marine park with snorkelling and dolphin watching, if not, at certain times of the year, the migration of large cetaceans. 
Its privileged location, protected and away from both the cities and the main coastal road, makes it safer and quieter even at times when there may be protests in the capital Nairobi and Mombasa, as has been the case in recent weeks.
For those arriving at Mombasa airport, for the past three years, there is no longer any need to cross the island city to take the road to Watamu and Malindi, but a junction connects to the town of Mazeras and from there a beautiful hilly road leads directly to Kilifi, from where one reaches Watamu in less than an hour.
Expectations are high, so much so that the resorts and the main hotels and restaurants are already open or opening this week, in anticipation of the August rush.
