Italy-Kenya, between tax breaks and agreements

Strengthened relations, in the words of the two Presidents

15-03-2023 by Freddie del Curatolo

Relations between Kenya and Italy emerge decisively strengthened from yesterday's day in Nairobi, which was also followed on the spot by the portal of Italians in Kenya.
This is not a personal thought, but what the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Ruto, and the Italian Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, declared (and with many examples and plans for the immediate future).
In the official setting of the State House, in a joint press conference after a private meeting that lasted about an hour and three quarters, Ruto and Mattarella illustrated the common path of two peoples 'who have always been in friendship and in excellent relations' (Ruto's words) and who 'have the same vision on international issues, from the economy to the green economy, to the issue of climate change and security' (Mattarella's words).

Specifically, the Kenyan leader explained that during the visit of Mattarella and his delegation, in which not surprisingly the name of Deputy Foreign Minister Edmondo Cirielli stands out, two memorandums of understanding have already been signed and a fundamental programme for the bilateral ties of the two countries has been launched, one related to the elimination of tax barriers and double taxation. "This process will favour economic and commercial interchange between Italy and Kenya in a mutually satisfactory manner," said Ruto, pointing out that Italy, as a member country of the European Union, is one of the fundamental partners for the export of Kenyan products such as tea and avocados, and with tax breaks and facilitations for businesses it will be even more so. On the other hand, there is the invitation to Italian companies to invest in Kenya.

In the midst of this climate of collaboration, also sanctioned by a series of loans and donations that will reach 100 million dollars in the hydro-culture, renewable energy and social sectors, Mattarella emphasised the commitment to collaborate in research and technology to help young Kenyans grow, with a special eye on universities and with reference to the Luigi Broglio Space Centre, defined by the President as 'an Italian success story' where there will be an even stronger connection between the Italians who manage it and the Kenyan 'hosts', as the Kenyan President confirmed. It was a positive day in which security issues were also touched upon, with Mattarella praising the Kenyan government for its efforts in the East African peace processes, with reference to the crises in Ethiopia and Tigray and the one still ongoing in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Today more than ever, not only diplomatically, Nairobi and Rome share many of the same values and look to the future with the same needs.

'Do not think that the problem of drought does not concern us,' Mattarella said, 'we too have great problems, such as the melting of glaciers. As for Africa, on the other hand, drought for our Head of State translates into a food emergency that can only increase migratory flows. Hence the need to collaborate and help those countries like Kenya that, while dramatically affected, can act as a driving force for others.
