Starting next week, the Kenyan government has announced a sweep of all short-term accommodation facilities in the country that are not registered, with priority given to Airbnb.
The decision to sweep all flats that are rented out on a daily basis in a more or less legal manner was in the air, especially after the increase in feminicides, some of which took place in just such situations.
In a joint statement by Deputy Interior Minister Raymond Omollo, together with his counterparts Anne Wang'ombe (Gender), Beatrice Inyangala (Higher Education) and John Ololtuaa (Tourism), it was reported that inspections on non-compliant properties will begin on Monday, 5 February.
On Wednesday, the government had already ordered all Airbnb operators to register with the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) with immediate effect, the Capital Fm network reported.
"We will subsequently coordinate with booking platforms to curb unregistered rentals and institute strict penalties, including fines and revocations for non-compliance," the joint statement read.
The deputy ministers called on residents' associations to work closely with law enforcement through information, joint inspections and coordinated responses to ensure compliance.
They argued that the initiative underlines the government's commitment to safeguarding the welfare of the people who use these services.
Recent unfortunate incidents in Kenya, such as the tragic killing of influencer Starlet Wahu in Nairobi and the murder of 20-year-old university student Rita Waeni in a rented house in the immediate suburbs, Roysambu, have raised concerns and increased calls for improved security measures.
