ROADWORKS

Pending wider projects and the financing by the African Bank for the four-lane motorway that will connect the Tanzanian town of Bagamoyo to the Kenyan coastal road of Malindi, in these days those who travel from Kilifi to Malindi on the two-lane state road, will notice how the two sides of the so-called "highway" have already been prepared for the asphalt that will allow the enlargement of the entire stretch, while also working simultaneously from Mombasa to Kanamai, for another 40 km of the country's only coastal artery.
The main problems for the enlargement and the adaptation to 4 lanes will come from Gede to Malindi, where the road is not sufficiently expandable in some parts of the hills, as well as from Kilifi to Takaungu, towards Mombasa.
It is not certain that in those stretches we can aim at the construction of an alternative road that will pass through the interior, as well as from the projects of the Tanzania-Kenya motorway, before Malindi the same should deviate decidedly in the hinterland and then exit at the bridge over the river Sabaki.
But these are only hypotheses that, at the moment, are neither adequately based on visible and assessable projects, nor on definitive financing and consequent contracts. For now, what is certain is that some sections of Mombasa-Malindi have been widened, as was the case with the Gede-Watamu road, and that in the near future they will be asphalted to allow a better flow and less difficult and risky overtaking, consequently less accidents.
