Kenya launches new international driver's license

You can drive without any problems in 150 countries.

For those who remember, there was a time when Kenyan driver's licenses did not even include the date of birth. If you were over 18, you could drive. That was it.
Today, the country where crossing the street can be a philosophical exercise in fate has decided to at least bring some order to the way its citizens drive outside its borders.
Yesterday, the Automobile Association of Kenya (AA Kenya) officially launched the new international driver's license, a redesigned document similar in format to a passport, with enhanced security features and, above all, with the ambition of being taken seriously everywhere. Even in Italy, where bureaucracy has never been kind to exotic documents.
The new International Driving Permit (IDP) will allow Kenyan citizens to drive legally in over 150 countries without having to take additional tests or apply for local licenses. This is no small detail in a world where the driving skills honed among crazy matatus and indecisive goats are often not recognized in the orderly parking lots of Europe.
The change is not just aesthetic. The new document is equipped with advanced security systems and a digital verification function, which allows foreign authorities to authenticate it immediately. This is a necessary response to a problem that had become embarrassing in recent years: the increase in fake international licenses, which had led to several Kenyans being stopped and fined abroad, victims not only of checks but also of a system that was too easy to circumvent.
The new permit, which costs 12,000 Kenyan shillings per year, is valid for work, study, and travel. For many young people, for example, it represents a door that is finally opening: that of working as professional drivers abroad, a sector where until now a passport was valid, but a driver's license was not.
AA Kenya is inviting over five million Kenyan drivers with national licenses to convert them to the new international format as soon as possible. It is not just a formality, but a kind of global certification of automotive existence: official recognition that even those who have learned to drive amid potholes, dust, and improvisation technically possess the same skills as those who park with Swiss discipline.
To obtain the new international license, you must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid license issued by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), and have been driving for at least two years. In addition, you must always carry both your international permit and your original Kenyan license with you when driving abroad.
Applications can be submitted at AA Kenya offices or via the association's online portal. You will need a completed form, two passport photos signed on the back, a copy of your license, and a copy of your ID card or passport.
The document does not replace the national license, but translates it into a language that is understandable to the rest of the world. It is, after all, a cultural translation rather than a technical one: an attempt to transform the art of surviving Kenyan traffic into a certified, exportable, recognized skill.
For years, many Kenyans have driven abroad with the same feeling as someone entering a bank with a crumpled banknote: formally valid, but always on the verge of being viewed with suspicion.
Now, with this little passport-like booklet, Kenya is trying to change the narrative. It does not promise better roads or more humane traffic. But at least, when a Kenyan starts their engine in Rome, Milan, or Bologna, they will be able to do so with a document that no longer apologizes for its existence.
