We have always said that Malindi has always taught the religious world and beyond about coexistence between different faiths, and we have demonstrated this with videos and articles. It therefore seems very clear (to us) why Pope Leo XIV appointed Willybard Kitogho Lagho, Kenyan bishop of the Catholic diocese of Malindi, as a new member of the Vatican's Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue. This is one of the main administrative bodies of the Roman Curia, the complex administrative body that assists the Pope in governing the Catholic Church. Lagho was already president of the Commission for Interreligious Dialogue and Ecumenism (CIRDE) of the Kenyan Bishops' Conference (KCCB) and also president of the Interreligious Council of Kenya (IRCK), a national body that promotes harmony between the different religious communities in Kenya. But yesterday Pope Prevost elevated him, confident that he will be able to bring to bear not only his personal experience, but also that of a town where Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Hinduism and African animism have always coexisted. Malindi is famous throughout Kenya for its annual interfaith prayer for peace, where all the leaders of the faiths represented in the district gather to pray, each to his own God and in his own way, so that through the contribution of all, peace, freedom, social justice, the protection and safeguarding of creation, and spiritual and moral values may be promoted.
