One of the most attractive and pleasantly informal boutique hotels with bar and restaurant in Watamu, overlooking one of its most picturesque bays, has recently reopened under new, young, dynamic management.
Sunset Beach, a well-kept oasis just a stone's throw from the centre but in the relaxation of the beach, is all about rediscovery thanks to the passion, craftsmanship and creativity of two young Italians.
Matteo, a 28-year-old barman from Trieste with decades of experience, and Tatiana, from Padua, who has been in Kenya since 2014, complement each other and together have re-launched this little goitre, which could become one of the places to visit regularly, as well as a "buen retiro" for holidays or even weekends from Nairobi and other cities in the country.
Matteo is the "deus ex machina" of pleasure, proposing quality and original cocktails, giving not only the pleasure of a good drink, but also an olfactory and sensorial experience through particular perfumes and essences.
Tatiana, who fell in love with Watamu after working in Nairobi where "it's cold and there's no sea", adds her feminine eye and taste and is mainly in charge of the rooms and reception.
The small and charming boutique hotel consists of three double rooms and one triple room and a delightful "self contained" bungalow that enjoys more privacy than the other accommodations.
All rooms have a sea view veranda with a pleasant 'comfort zone'.
Sunset Beach is aimed in particular at young travellers, couples who know how to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the place, as well as not disdaining the never intrusive "movida" of a disco-bar that often becomes a meeting point for people who want to have fun.
This magical oasis of peace and contemplation is located not far from the main shopping street of the tourist town and enjoys a privileged elevated position from which to experience the exciting atmosphere of the African sunset. Compared to the past, the restaurant has added a wooden platform under the stars to increase the number of seats available.
While the hospitality service is always open, the restaurant is open from Thursday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurant serves fish dishes (and it couldn't be otherwise, with the ocean just a few metres away, every day the fresh catch goes straight from the fisherman to the plate).
At lunchtime, there are tasty, original poke salads and tartare, and for dinner, mainly grilled and fried fish.
In this period of time restrictions, the appointment not to be missed, every evening from 5pm, is the classic Italian aperitif with a wide choice of appetisers served at the table accompanied by your favourite alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink expertly prepared by Matteo, at no extra charge.
From Friday 22, Sunset Beach will also inaugurate its weekly Beach Parties, always starting at 5pm and in accordance with current restrictions.
