The motorway project, partly dual carriageway, which will connect Tanzania to Kenya, or rather the towns of Bagamoyo and Malindi of a 452 km distance, is almost halfway complete.
This was announced by the Kenyan Deputy Minister of the Interior, Raymond Omollo, confirming that the Bagamoyo-Tanga-Horohoro/Lungalunga-Malindi section is already at an advanced stage of construction, with the 13.5 km section from the Nyali bridge to the Mtwapa creek (of which only 2.5 km is dual carriageway) nearing completion. The road, which includes six overpasses and pedestrian walkways, 27 km of sidewalks and 24 km of service roads, as well as street lighting and a drainage system, will become not only a link but also a key decongestion measure for daily traffic to and from Kenya's second city, pending the construction of the second Nyali bridge, which, via the bypass, should allow motorists to completely bypass the city to travel to Nairobi, Moi International Airport, and the south coast.
In addition, the construction of the road, managed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), also includes the upgrading of several intersections, including Bamburi, Links Road Junction, Bamburi Junction Bridge, and Kengeleni. According to Omollo, the project established between Kenya and Tanzania represents “a transformative step towards deeper regional integration and infrastructure modernization within the East African Community,” noting that work on the highway is progressing slowly, mainly due to land compensation issues, and stating that the government is in the process of compensating all those affected by the project.
As part of the project, the government also aims to restore 50 hectares of trees in the Rabai-Kaloleni forest as part of landscape restoration, as well as planting 400 trees to beautify the long route.
