WILDLIFE TOURISM
01-12-2023 by Freddie del Curatolo
What will hopefully be the last drops of the season are giving way to the first sunshine heralding the Kenyan summer.
While the coast has still maintained its high temperatures, if anything increasing the humidity to less than sustainable levels than usual, the place that most enjoys the arrival of the equatorial summer after the small but abundant rains is the savannah.
Faced with the sell-out in parks such as Masai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu, and the very good turnout that is being prepared in the two Tsavo, East and West, the situation is ideal for getting the wildlife back in shape and dispersing them in the immense spaces of its parks.
This will certainly make the safaris more adventurous, but also more varied and memorable from a wildlife point of view.
It is definitely better, and even more so on these occasions, to rely on experienced guides who know the habits of the individual animals inside out and know where to look for them at all times of the day. Being a safari guide is a real profession, like a sports instructor, chef and other professions. Professional guides take refresher courses, study, and have a passion for the savannah and its guests.
The risk, particularly at this time, is to rely (to save a few handfuls of euros) on those who have invented this trade or those who simply 'take you on safari'. When the vegetation rises again and the animals have plenty to eat and places to shelter and hide, without an expert guide you run the risk of going round in circles and seeing far less than you would with someone who knows their way around.
The advice of the portal of Italians in Kenya is to rely on experts: the safari is a wonderful experience that is often done only once or, at any rate, a few times in a lifetime; doing it in the best possible way is the minimum, if you do not want to just "plant a flag" and reduce an unforgettable adventure that remains in the soul, to a selfie that stays on your mobile phone and fleetingly transits on social networks.
