Aberdare, between mountains waterfalls and forests

Unspoilt afro-alpine landscape

20-02-2024 by Leni Frau

It is still one of the most pristine natural places in Kenya, suspended in an Afro-alpine landscape limbo that has no equal, except in the volcanic Ruwenzori range between Uganda and Congo.
The Aberdare forest massif, about 100 kilometres long with its national park, forms the easternmost wall of the great Rift Valley, with the two main peaks, Ol Donyo Lesatima and Kinangop, reaching 3,999 and 3,906 metres high respectively. It is definitely one of the places in this country not to be missed and one that you will not forget.

As the poet said, it features 'majestic peaks, moors and intriguing waterfalls', but the area bordered by Aberdare National Park is also picturesque gorges, wooded trails scenic ridges and sudden openings that provide the settings for the lives of elephants, black rhinoceroses, leopards, spotted hyenas, baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, buffalos, zebras, warthogs and antelopes, among others, as well as the rare serval, bongo and African civet.
The park is easily accessible by tarmac road from Nyeri and Naro Moru on the eastern side and is about 150 km from Nairobi. A road crosses the park through the lower slopes to the Moorlands and connects with another road from Naivasha on the western side. The park headquarters is located 15 km from Nyeri town, along the Nyeri - Nyahururu road.

During their excursions, park visitors can fish for trout in the rivers, go camping or picnicking. Aberdare also attracts birdwatchers from around the world, thanks to the 250 species of birds in the park, including Jackson's Francolin, Sparrowhawks, Goshawks, Eagles, Sunbirds, Plovers and the endangered Aberdare Cysticola.
Another attraction are the waterfalls: the main ones are the Karuru Falls, which fall in three places, for a total of 273 metres. Then there are the Chania waterfalls and many other smaller waterfalls.
Also thanks to its springs and waterfalls, Aberdare is one of the most important water reservoirs in the country.
