Tiwi, Kenya's beach left over from 40 years ago

Before Diani, a paradise of nature, ocean and silence

25-01-2023 by Freddie del Curatolo

We are on the south coast of Kenya, just before Ukunda, a town from which turning left toward the sea (coming from Mombasa) leads to Diani.
A few kilometers before, the Indian Ocean can be reached only by dirt roads that pass through villages surrounded by palm groves and fruit trees.
Along these bumpy and still quite virgin roads, one arrives at Tiwi Beach.
Here the time of tourism seems to have stopped 40 years ago, when those who came to enjoy a marine vacation in these parts did so in tents, by their own means and quite freely. Or found the first cottages, very spartan but in the end lacking nothing and especially by the sea, with a splendid spectacle of nature and a silence, a peace that refreshed the heart and soul. And, surprise, it still does in 2023!
No resorts (they tried, but apart from the Amani that was also run by Italian tour operators, which burned down) have not taken root: no side services, no discos or restaurants...mass tourism here still seems far from coming. And for once, we say, thankfully!
Every once in a while it takes a dip into the past, into an ancient form of relaxation and vacation enjoyment.
Even if the cell phone signal arrives and seems the only concession to modernity.
For those who resist little and dream of a Dubai-style seaside Kenya or, at the limit, Sharm El Sheikh, Tiwi may be worth an hour's passage; for those who long for freedom and adventure, free campsites and Robinsonian atmospheres, even a week. Must-see!
A taste of paradise in our video below.
