East African Safari Classic Rally back in Watamu

In february "invasion" of old cars and tourists

18-01-2022 by redazione

Also this year, as in the last edition dated 2020, the East African Safari Classic Rally will end in Watamu, after having crossed some of the most beautiful and impervious places in Kenya for more than a week.
It was the official media partner of the traditional African rally with vintage cars (up to the seventies/eighties) that confirmed the dates and place of arrival. Standard Group has guaranteed 21 million shillings in sponsorship in exchange for media exclusivity.
The newspaper linked to the group reported statements from organizer Natasha Tundo who said that despite the turbulent times the world is experiencing due to the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic, expectations for the classic East African rally are top notch.
"International fans of rallying and racing in general, will have a perfect opportunity to enjoy an adrenaline-filled 10-day competition," said Tundo. "The race which will run through 5,000 km, will start in Naivasha and cross 12 counties including Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia, Kajiado, Taita Taveta and Kilifi.
The competition as mentioned, will end in Watamu, finishing at Ocean Sports.
For the coastal resort this is great news because hotel reservations are already flowing in for the weekend of February 18-20 and certainly in those days restaurants and other activities will benefit from the "circus" of the East African Safari Classic Rally (EASCR).
In addition to local drivers, the rally has so far attracted competitors from the United Kingdom, South Africa, Poland, Portugal and the United States.
Kenya's success in hosting the Safari Rally leg of the World Rally Championship last season sparked huge interest in EASCR.
A Mini Classic rally held last year and won by defending champion Baldev Chager, acted as a dress rehearsal for this year's EASCR championships.
The event attracted industry players including former World Junior Champion Patrik Sandell and YouTube "guru" Ken Block.
