Electronic travel authorisations in Kenya slower

ETA system sometimes fails to process in 72 hours

13-02-2024 by redazione

The new system of electronic Kenyan travel authorisation, eTA, which came into effect on 4 January and effectively replaced the online visa that was required until 31 December last year, has suffered a slowdown in issuing the certificate to fly to Kenya in recent days.
At its launch, it had in fact been guaranteed that the eTA would reach the applicant no later than 72 hours after sending the application specifications. For a few days this was the case, partly due to the fact that many tourists had already applied for the visa online before it expired, as it was valid for three months and was declared still valid for anyone who received it by 4 January 2024.

But in the last week, due to the large number of applications for the African country (not to be underestimated), a major international conference on the environment will start in Nairobi next week, attracting hundreds of delegates.
As a result, from the canonical 72 hours of waiting time, it has turned to at least six days. With the consequent worries of those who relied on the timetable and are still waiting, with departure expected in the next few days.

The unofficial news for now is that some airlines are aware of the situation of delays in the issuance of the eTA by the Kenyan government and are still letting passengers on board, but nothing is ever certain.
In the event of problems, it is still a good idea to contact the Kenyan embassy in Rome and ask for information, and if appropriate, have an email sent to them certifying the problem.
Hopefully this traffic jam will be resolved as soon as possible, and certainly not because fewer tourists will arrive in the country, but with the implementation of the system. Etakenya.go.ke is unfortunately not the only online platform of Kenyan institutions to have problems, as we have already reported in recent days. The immigration efns site is also down and others are working at reduced capacity.
