Since the boom in tourism on the Kenyan coast has increased the number of constructions to accommodate travellers and also residential homes, unfortunately fires are one of the few real problems that can ruin the dream of a business, a holiday or a buen retiro in terrestrial paradises such as Jacaranda Bay in Watamu.
Here, as we reported last Monday, a fire broke out that the wind and the roofs of dry palm trees, the so-called "makuti", spread from the splendid Alawi boutique hotel to five other villas and a bed & breakfast, the Pole Pole.
We visited the site to get an idea of the extent of this sad event and to talk to the owners, administrators and staff of the houses in a well-kept residential area overlooking one of Kenya's most beautiful beaches. Damage (a lot of it), looting in the houses (inevitable, as we all know, it's not just a Kenyan phenomenon) but also the desire to start again as soon as possible, so that beauty returns and dreams (perhaps a little more wide-eyed, with greater care because such a precious investment cannot be entrusted to African fatalism) do not have to make room for regrets.
