Here is 'Smarta', the first mobile phone made in Kenya

Assembled by a local company and economical

It will be called 'Smarta' and will be the first android mobile phone assembled and manufactured in Kenya.
The Kenyan telecommunications company inaugurated the first smartphone assembly plant in the presence of the President of the Republic, William Ruto, in collaboration with international mobile phone manufacturers.

The East Africa Device Assembly Kenya Limited (EADAK), based in Athi River, accepted the government's challenge to be able to sell 'local' mobile phones and bring up to three million of them to market in one year.
The Smartas will be sold starting at Kes. 7,499, or about EUR 50, an affordable price for many Kenyans who would otherwise find it difficult to buy a state-of-the-art smartphone, especially after the record rise of the dollar against the Kenyan shilling and the rise of inflation.
There will be two models: the Neon 5-inch 'Smarta' and the Neon 6-and-a-half-inch 'Ultra', which are 4G-enabled, while EADAK also plans to introduce a locally assembled tablet in the coming months.

As stated by EADAK president Joshua Chepkwony, the Smarta will be available nationwide at Faiba shops and retailers, Safaricom shops and the Masoko online platform.
"The launch of EADAK reaffirms our belief in the power of connectivity to transform lives and drive economic progress. This partnership underscores our relentless pursuit to expand access to 4G and empower Kenyans through affordable, high quality smartphones, create job opportunities and grow our economy," said Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom's Chief Executive Officer.

With this operation, the company expects to be able to employ 300 to 500 workers in the assembly factory, thus creating employment and specialisation. According to experts, without the new import and digital media taxes, mobile phones assembled in the country could cost even less.
