In the past 56 days we have seen and heard it all, but finally the longest doctors' strike in Kenya's history is over.
This was announced a short while ago by the Ministry of Health on its X page, including a video of the signing between representatives of the Kenya Medics Practictioners Dentist Union (KMPDU) and Kenyan government officials.
The doctors had crossed arms last 12 March, demanding an adjustment to the collective labour agreement that now dates back to 2017 and has never taken into account the galloping inflation in the country. In addition, the issue of a thousand residents who had been promised employment with a salary in tune with their professionalism for over a year had been raised.
The tug-of-war was exhausting and even had bitter tones, distances that seemed unbridgeable, and above all, it spilled over onto the poor people.
Those living on the border with Tanzania and Uganda had to cross the border to be treated in inexpensive facilities, while many private clinics reduced their rates to accommodate the so-called middle class.
Some mission hospitals or hospitals with social premises, such as the Ruaraka Neema of the Italian NGO World Friends, have had to work overtime to save lives and treat the destitute. Some striking doctors, on the other hand, provided private treatment to patients who used to go to their hospital, while many private hospitals that used the services of doctors who also work in the public sector and went on strike, found themselves in difficulty but often reached an economic agreement with their staff.
All this in the midst of a major emergency such as the floods and related flooding, which claimed more than 250 official victims and for which dozens of people are still reported to be hospitalised in public health facilities in serious condition.
As of tomorrow, hopefully, everything will be better. That is, in terms of public health, as difficult as before the strike.
