Flight strike suspended, negotiations underway

Gradual recovery in Kenya, amid delays and cancellations

17-02-2026 by Freddie del Curatolo

Airport workers belonging to the KAWU union have announced that they have reached an agreement with the Kenyan Ministry of Transport to begin negotiations, which they had been pushing for in recent weeks. The lack of response to their demands had led to a national strike at airports in Nairobi, Mombasa, and other domestic destinations.
After delays and cancellations over the last 24 hours, according to reports in the national newspaper Daily Nation and echoed by other media outlets and agencies, the strike has now been suspended.
It remains to be seen when canceled flights will be able to resume their regular schedules and how many delays will accumulate, but the situation is gradually improving.
It is also expected that international airlines that had announced the suspension of flights and left thousands of passengers stranded in Kenya and abroad, including Italy, will in turn issue statements on the resumption of operations and the priorities established.
