Nairobi airport, Italians stranded and flights cancelled

11-09-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

After a night spent freezing in the car park outside Nairobi's JKIA international airport due to the staff strike that blocked the airport last night and has not yet ended, for at least twenty Italians and hundreds of other foreign passengers the discomforts continue and the anxiety of not knowing when they will be able to return to Italy after their holiday in Kenya is growing.
Among them are also many children, who spent the night in a temperature below ten degrees, without the airport staff providing them with blankets or water, with bars and shops closed until 7 am this morning and without assistance from the airlines. At the same time, other travellers were stuck inside the terminals, waiting to get their luggage back and be able to clear customs. An unreal situation caused by the airport workers' strike, which had already been announced some time ago if the government did not enter into negotiations to give them assurances regarding the ventilated contract to hand over the management of the airport to the Indian company Adani, for the next 30 years.
This morning the airlines provided assistance and sent communiqués to their customers, but flights were cancelled and local connections to Malindi, Mombasa, Ukunda, Lamu and Kisumu are also disrupted. Discomfort not only for those departing, but also for those who were due to leave Italy today, with flights suspended, while some of the night flights have been diverted to Mombasa. A short while ago, some departing flights started the check-in process, but the terminals announcing flights are still switched off.
The Italian Embassy in Kenya this morning tracked down the compatriots and immediately got in touch with them, trying, despite the difficulty of the situation as the dispute continues, to provide them with assistance, also asking the local authorities to intervene.
ONCE AGAIN, WE REMIND OUR COMPATRIOTS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF REGISTERING ON THE FARNESINA'S ‘WHERE WE ARE IN THE WORLD’ WEBSITE, GIVING DETAILS OF THEIR HOLIDAY. IT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO BE TRACED IN THE EVENT OF PROBLEMS OF ANY KIND.

We will continue to update you throughout the day.
