MOURNING

Kenya and many compatriots lose one of the biggest hearts of solidarity in this country. A large and tireless heart in the petite physique of Piera Chiodi, known to all as "Mama Piera." The Bergamo-born resident had founded with her husband Roberto, who passed away shortly thereafter, the "Asante sana" Children Centre in Mambrui, where in a short time, thanks to the help of many Italians who had visited the orphanage and realized Piera's genuine and intelligent work, she had created two dormitories, male and female with their own facilities, a large refectory with kitchen and disengagement, and above all a real elementary school with the eight classes plus the three kindergarten classes and thirteen teachers on the payroll.
Mama Piera had not been in the best of health for some time, but her energy was still indispensable to "Asante Sana." She left suddenly, however, an illness left not only the center's 130 guests without a mother, but everyone who knew her with a void inside.
Asante Sana began her work caring for orphans or abandoned children, often by HIV-positive mothers, looking after and caring for them in synergy with another center, that of the equally active, energetic and generous Suon Nadia in Ndithini, near Nairobi.
Several times in the past we have raised funds for that oasis of well-being and growth for Kenyan children that is "Asante Sana," and we realized directly the goodness of Piera Chiodi's work. We saw her a few days ago and, visibly tired and tried, she was telling us how during this time of food emergency so many in the Mambrui hinterland were approaching her, hoping she would take in their children they could not feed. "How can I do that? I would like to help them all," she told us.
She would not stop, she would never stop. It was her very big heart that gave out, not her spirit devoted to helping the less fortunate. We will miss you, Mama Piera.
