Back to flying in Kenya

Airports open since yesterday, not many people

16-07-2020 by redazione

In Kenya it's back to flying.
Few planes, few passengers, few routes.
But it is already significant that there is the willingness, with all possible precautions, to resume moving as comfortably and quickly as possible within the country, bridging distances that would otherwise be difficult to cover during the day and which are now the prerogative almost only of heavy vehicles, whether trucks or large buses.
Yesterday the national company Kenya Airways reopened the routes from Nairobi to Mombasa and Kisumu, as well as in Mombasa also landed the "little sister" Jambojet, which also covers other domestic destinations where Kenya Airways does not arrive.
This is the case of Malindi, where the Jambojet Bombardier landed after almost four months at 11.30 a.m. bringing from Nairobi a bunch of tourists and taking as many, about thirty, with destination Nairobi. Among them the compatriot entrepreneur Roberto Lenzi.
"They checked and measured our temperature both on boarding and at destination - says the owner of the 7 Islands and Crystal Bay resorts in Watamu - making us disinfect our hands at the entrance of the aircraft and positioning us according to social distances. A quiet flight and also in Nairobi the same procedures and friendliness".
Hopefully now there will be a growing response, because the airlines cannot withstand the impact of half-empty flights and returns for long, and the cadences may not be daily but bi or tri-weekly.
Meanwhile Fly540 and East African have also announced the reopening of the routes from Friday. For now it will not yet be possible to go from Malindi to Lamu, the only flight arrives from Nairobi and then back to Malindi. The hotels on the coast are counting a lot on the desire of the Kenyans of Nairobi to move particularly on weekends, while the owners of villas and houses are already coming for the summer holidays with the family. With the necessary precautions, because for "domestic" trips there is no need for a Covid-19 Free certificate.
