Elections: Odinga's appeal against results today

The opposition is convinced it has elements

22-08-2022 by redazione

Today, Monday 22 August, is the deadline to file an appeal against the result of Kenya's presidential election that saw the victory of outgoing Vice-President William Ruto over rival and long-time opposition leader Raila Odinga, backed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Yesterday, Odinga's coalition, Azimio La Umoja confirmed that the petition to the Supreme Court will be filed and that there are, on the part of its candidate, reasonable grounds to believe it will succeed.
'There is no doubt that the Kenyan people have spoken loudly on 9 August,' Odinga said on the sidelines of a function he attended in Nairobi's Donholm district. 'The voice of the people will not be silenced and no one will be able to take victory away from them.
With the candidate who was defeated by the results announced on 16 August, there was also coalition deputy Martha Karua who was even more peremptory: 'We will finally know the truth and this will set us all free, because without justice there can be no lasting peace,' reiterated the former Justice Minister. From the moment the appeal is filed (which may not be the only one), the Supreme Court of Kenya will have 14 days to deliver its verdict. If the election is annulled, the vote must be held within 60 days of the decision. In 2017, Odinga appealed against the independent electoral commission IEBC and won, and the election was made to be rerun, the first case in the history of the African continent.
