After the deadline for filing an appeal against the results of the 9 August elections, which saw outgoing Vice-President William Ruto win the first round with 50.49% of the vote against 48.8% for his rival Raila Odinga, Odinga appealed to the Kenyan Supreme Court, as required by the constitution.
Claiming to have evidence that the elections were 'rigged' and pointing to the chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Wafula Chebukati, as the 'puppet master' of such opaque conduct, Odinga and the leaders of his political coalition Azimio La Umoja (Declaration of Unity) have taken binders and binders to the Nairobi court. The Supreme Court will now have 14 days to assess the relevance of Odinga's grievances and possibly order a new election process within 60 days. This would not be unprecedented, because five years ago, in August 2017, the same thing happened and the election was rerun in October, however, confirming Uhuru Kenyatta's victory precisely against Odinga.
This time, however, from what the national media hinted at, in the crosshairs would be the falsified data that would not overturn the victory, but bring both candidates below the 50 per cent threshold, thus to eventual runoffs.
"We will defeat the cartel of corruption," Odinga said publicly, veiledly referring to the coalition under Ruto.
. "We know who stole our elections and we will destroy them. They are the same ones who are now buying parliamentarians to get a majority in parliament'.
