Italian killed by elephant outside Tsavo

Nando, 66 years, wanted to make a selfie

He wanted to take a close-up photograph of the elephant that was drinking on the banks of the Galana and made the mistake of getting too close to the animal.
Yesterday morning, Ferdinando 'Nando' Mocciola, a 66-year-old Italian holidaymaker from Lodi who was well known in Malindi, died.
Nando was on safari with his wife Magda and a group of friends, and after a wonderful day in the savannah seeing lions and other animals, during Sunday morning breakfast at Swara Camp he was captivated by the image of an elephant drinking along the Galana river, just below the lodge where he was staying.
Despite warnings from friends and staff at the tented camp, and an initial warning, Nando allegedly evaded their recommendations and, promising not to get too close, headed for the river.
Here, due to circumstances that can never be fully clarified, tragedy struck. Nando probably got too close to the elephant to take a close-up photo with his mobile phone, and the pachyderm threw him to the ground with a blow of its trunk. The elephant then hit him in the thigh with a tusk, causing a large cut. But the fatal wound occurred during the fall, which caused the unwise Italian to puncture his chest. Nando died after two hours, while waiting for help to arrive from Malindi, in front of the incredulous and dismayed eyes of his wife and friends. A big hug goes out to Magda and Nando's children, whom we have known personally for twelve years.
