Italy will finance "Let it not happen again", a project against violence against women in Kenya, through the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development.
The agreement, which provides for a contribution of 300,000 euros, was signed by the Ambassador of Italy in Nairobi Alberto Pieri and Acting Country Director of UN Women, Cecile Mukarubuga and will support
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Public Services, Youth and Gender Affairs, Un Women, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), civil society and organisations for the protection of survivors of gender-based violence. The initiative is part of the Joint Program on Gender Based Violence conducted by the Government of Nairobi and the United Nations to support specific activities to strengthen response actions and accountability mechanisms against gender-based violence, to prepare for future election rounds. Activities will be implemented by UN Women and OHCHR, in close collaboration with right-holders and local institutions (such as police, judiciary and health services) in four counties (Nairobi, Kisumu, Bungoma and Migori), so as to promote peer-learning processes and good practices in Kenya.
On the occasion of the signing, Ambassador Pieri praised the fruitful and lasting partnership with the United Nations system, recalling Italy's commitment to promoting gender equity and combating gender-based violence at a global level and in particular in Africa.
A commitment, Pieri said, that requires transformation actions aimed at improving social standards through actions taken at local, national and international level. The role of civil society organisations in raising awareness and protecting the environment is crucial in this respect.
