Kenya quiet while waiting for the end of the count

Only politicians blame themselves, delaying the president's announcement

14-08-2022 by Freddie del Curatolo

If it were a tactic to defuse tension and have a peaceful post-election period throughout Kenya, it might work. The slowness in the final counting of the ballot papers, at first already broadcast by the media in an arbitrary and incomplete (but real) manner, is bringing the atmosphere of anticipation to a level of boredom that adds to the lowest turnout ever.
We have said it time and again, may whoever wins, but may peace win above all.
It is always the lapdogs who unleash their wrath on those who snatch the bone from them, as the Poet said, so the already harried process of transcription of votes from electronic to paper registers to the final templates, by the Iebc Electoral Commission officials, has been repeatedly interrupted due to allegations of fraud by minor members of candidate Raila Odinga's coalition directed at opponents of Vice President William Ruto's faction.

Meanwhile, the recount also marks a continuing neck-and-neck on the ballot thread, while the leading politicians of the two coalitions seem more interested in the numbers of MPs and majorities in the senate and the chamber of deputies (called the national assembly here) than in the coronation of the president. Let us hope that this is a sign of non-belligerence.

In the meantime, a happy and peaceful August holiday to all.
