Three days of official visits to Rome for Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Arriving on Thursday evening with a special direct Kenya Airways flight and a small delegation including Foreign Minister Raychelle Omamo, Kenyatta entered his country's history on Friday as the first leader to officially visit the Holy See.
Received by the Swiss Pontifical Guards with the honours due to the Heads of State at the Apostolic Palace, President Kenyatta then had a private audience with Pope Francis before personally conducting the bilateral talks with the Vatican with Minister Omamo, presided over by the Secretary of State, Bishop Pietro Parolin.
The two delegations discussed several issues of mutual interest between Kenya and the Holy See, including education, health, peace and regional security and the fight against Covid-19.
On Saturday, as reported by the Quirinale on its official website, Uhuru Kenyatta met the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
During the meeting, the two Heads of State reaffirmed the increasingly strong relationship that has bound the two countries for many years and strengthened their common commitment in the field of trade, in cooperation relations concerning security and the fight against Covid-19.
In an interview on the sidelines of the meeting, the Ambassador of Kenya to Italy, Jackline Yonga, said that the talks have restored confidence in the trade exchange activities between the two countries.
"Italy is one of Kenya's main European trading partners and is one of the top export destinations for fruit and vegetables, leather, fish and coffee," said Yonga. "In 2019, Kenya exported goods worth 3.4 billion shillings to Italy, down from the 3.9 billion recorded in 2018, but it remains one of the main investment markets for Kenya with investors ready to make their business entry.
The Ambassador reported that there is interest in coffee exports and agri-foodstuffs and that the San Marco base in Ngomeni and the existing health projects in Malindi were also mentioned.
But the tourism button was also touched, as reported by the press office of the Kenyan State House.
Kenya is still one of the countries in Group E, those blocked by Italy for leisure travel.
It is hoped that this meeting will bring news and that Mattarella will be a good intermediary with the Farnesina.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella will pay an official visit to Kenya next March.
