Kenyatta locks borders to Tanzania and Somalia

Decision in the hardest day for Covid-19 cases and deaths

16-05-2020 by redazione

Kenya has decided to close all land borders with Tanzania and Somalia.
The decision was announced a short while ago by the President of the Republic, Uhuru Kenyatta, on the very day on which the country recorded the negative record of Covid-19 infections, or 49 and the highest number of deaths in 24 hours, five.
With 479 active cases and fifty deaths and a total of 830 cases in just over two months, Kenya is now experiencing an increase in contagion since it set up the compulsory buffer for those crossing the borders with Tanzania and Somalia.
So in the last 24 hours, 18 people, practically all truck drivers, have been found positive for the test at the Namanga and Lunga Lunga customs between Kenya and Tanzania, while 12 Tanzanians have been sent back from the Tanzanian side to Isibania. A further 14 cross-border cases were registered in Wajir, the county north-east of the country bordering Somalia.
"In the last week, cases have increased due to people crossing land borders," Kenyatta explained, "only 46 cases in the last few days. We call on all citizens to apply the directives issued by the Ministry of Health more closely so as not to risk the pandemic spreading further".
The total number of Tanzanian truckers sent back across the border in the last week has risen to 48.
