Malindi crisis: The Old Man and The Sea closed

After 26 years Malindi lose an historical restaurant

11-09-2020 by redazione

From the emergency of the pandemic another blow to the heart for the tourist and gastronomic Malindi, after 26 years closes one of the most characteristic restaurants in the Swahili district: The Old Man And The Sea, known by Italians as "Il Vecchio e il Mare".
In addition to the name borrowed from the historical novel by Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man And The Sea was a destination for travelers and residents not only for its location on the waterfront of the Arab neighborhood of Shella, but for the historic building that recalls the old Malindi and the style of the Swahili coast that brings it closer to the most celebrated Lamu and Zanzibar.
The Old Man was also known for its excellent grill, from which occasionally came out specialties difficult to find in other restaurants, such as Malindi soles, or the slightly spicy Swahili soup. A local menu with a slightly Anglo-Saxon imprint like its founders, but the restaurant has always been frequented by an international clientele appreciated in social spaces such as Tripadvisor.
Permanent closure or transfer? Today the restaurant appears empty and abandoned to itself, the sign has been removed.
The facebook page of the club is silent since last July 29, when the owners noted in the last post: "So we move "leaving the Old' venturing onto the "New" Old & The Sea. All very strange after 26 years here, but it will be entusimante readapt, recreate and innovate the way we move forward safely, through these strange times!"
What will it mean?
