Nairobi-Nederland outside a plane: alive

Kenian immigrant found in hypothermia in a cargo

08-02-2021 by redazione

The underage boy from Kenya who hid in the undercarriage compartment of a cargo plane that left Nairobi and arrived in Maastricht, Holland, after 24 hours, has arrived alive, although in a serious condition of hypothermia.
This is yet another incredible story of one of the many immigrant escapes from African countries, although Kenya is one of the countries with fewer cases of this kind.
It must be said that Nairobi's 'Jomo Kenyatta' international airport is very close to degraded areas of the metropolis where poverty, especially in this period of pandemic, has increased even more worryingly.
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, the plane made two intermediate stops, one in Istanbul and one in London, before ending its journey in the Netherlands when the boy was found semi-conscious by airport staff.
He was transported to a local hospital with hypothermia, but according to doctors his condition is improving.
It is still unclear how the young Kenyan managed to evade the controls and climb into the aircraft's nacelle and then find a space inside the undercarriage compartment. The investigation launched by the Dutch police will try to ascertain whether human trafficking was behind this desperate journey. According to the Guardian, staff at London's Stansted Airport checked the condition of the aircraft but did not notice anything unusual.
A few months ago, a hibernating body of a man, later revealed to be another Kenyan, fell from a flight from Nairobi on the outskirts of the British capital. The immigrant had already died from the cold and flew off the plane after the landing gear opened.
"He was really lucky to be saved," said the spokesman of Maastricht Airport.
Usually commercial flights reach up to 38,000 feet and the chances of withstanding the cold and rarefied oxygen are very slim.
