Power blackout in most of Kenya since this morning, Tuesday, January 11.
The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) said the causes of the power outage affecting several regions of the country, in addition to the capital Nairobi and much of the coast, stem from the fall of a pylon on the Kiambere-Embakasi power line in Nairobi.
"We lost power due to a major probklema on the Kiambere - Embakasi high voltage power line at 10:45 this morning," the Kenya Power statement read. "Our engineers are working to restore electricity supply while repairs are ongoing."
According to KPLC, the national power outage is due to the fact that before locating the damage and working on site, the power line must be stabilized from scratch, before resuming regular supply.
Doubts and complaints immediately erupted on social media, partly because the power outage comes days after the Ministry of Energy confirmed a 15 percent reduction in the cost of electricity in order to mitigate Kenyans from the high cost of living. This was also to fulfill a promise by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The Ministry noted that the reduction in the cost of energy took effect on January 1, 2022 and will last until December 2022.
"The Ministry of Energy confirms that the Kenya Gazette of January 7 made a 15 percent reduction in electricity tariffs. The reduction will increase livelihoods and economic growth by reducing the cost of living," reads part of the Ministry's statement.
