The Kenyan opposition is back on the streets again this Wednesday, and with it not only those who in good faith and because they still believe that demonstrating, as well as a right, is a solution, but also the provocateurs from both sides and above all total anarchy who in the past few days of protests have caused millions in damage and provoked discounts with the not-so-soft Kenyan police that led to a total of 20 dead and more than two hundred injured.
For today, the number two in the anti-government coalition, Martha Karua, has asked protesters to leave their homes at noon with a pot (the traditional "sufuria" for cooking cornmeal, rice, and beans) on their heads, tapping with a ladle in protest of the carotage they say is a consequence of President Ruto's policies. The opposition has announced that it will be the first of three consecutive days of protests expected to paralyze the capital Nairobi and other Kenyan cities, particularly in leader Raila Odinga's strongholds on Lake Victoria.
As the tourist destinations head into one of their peak seasons and have never been touched by the parallel chaos of marches and demonstrations, the embassies of 13 Western nations have issued an appeal to the two factions to find a peaceful solution to their issues. Led by the United States and Britain, the countries (including no Italy) have expressed "sadness and concern" over the situation afflicting Kenyans economically, criticizing both the actions of the police and the use of weapons and the intemperance of those who have turned what Odinga says should be peaceful demonstrations into battles against the established order.
We shall see what happens today and what will eventually be the painful tally of those who will have had damage to their businesses, been injured or worse will never return home.
