Tourism at this time may be the key to saving Kenya from recession and especially from the protests that the opposition has been unleashing on a weekly basis in the country, stirring up the poor and desperate and giving hope to ordinary people, who lock themselves in their homes during the violence, that something might change.
That tourism is a lifeline is evidenced by the fact that the resorts that (survive) with the influx of foreign travelers are the quieter ones, and that even on a day like yesterday that saw deaths, injuries and dozens of arrests in several towns, particularly in the north of the country, in Malindi, Watamu, Diani and Lamu nothing happened, stores and schools remained open and there were no demonstrations. Only the capitals of the two major coastal regions, Mombasa and Kilifi, saw Raila Odinga supporters and several provocateurs take to the streets, throwing stones at security forces, burning tires and blocking roads. But this was resolved in a purposeful but not overly violent manner.

It was different in the Nairobi suburbs of Kitengela and Mlolongo, where five people died after clashes, including gunfire, with police. In Kitengela a group of thugs stormed the police station, setting it on fire, while in Mlolongo the city Expressway was targeted. Finally, one death also occurred in Emali, a town on the Mombasa-Nairobi road, where police fired to defend their vehicles that were set on fire by protesters.
Vacation spots once again emerge unscathed from this climate of political and economic crisis that is exacerbating tempers and whose resolution is awaited.

"We will go on until President Ruto listens to and respects Kenyans," said opposition leader Raila Odinga, who pulled out of the Nairobi rally, denouncing the presence of sharpshooters in the Kamukunji camp where he was supposed to speak-especially if he does not give up on the implementation of the finance bill.
For now, Odinga has not announced the next day of protests, and meanwhile the holiday season, for foreigners as much as Kenyans, is approaching.
