President Ruto draws ministers from the opposition

New cabinet completed, but Gen Z disapproves

25-07-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

After a series of consultations with the majority and opposition, President William Ruto announced yesterday that he had completed the list of ministers in his new government.
The surprising news, which had already been circulating in political circles and among the public for days, was the inclusion of four members of the opposition ODM party in the new ministerial cabinet.
This choice was made with the blessing of party leader Raila Odinga and caused a rift with his two coalition allies, Martha Karua of the NARC (National Rainbow Coalition) and Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Democratic Movement.
The new ODM ministers are the party chairman, John Mbadi, who has been given the role of Treasury Minister, minority coalition leader Azimio La Umoja, Opiyo Wandayi at Energy, former Mombasa governor, Hassan Joho known as ‘The Sultan’, at Mineral Resources and Blue Economy, and former county council chairman, Wycliffe Oparanya at the Ministry of Cooperative Development.
The appointments come after weeks of street protests by GenZ youths who have called for an overhaul of the government citing rampant corruption and mismanagement of resources.
In reality, as we can see, the review is partial and from the first reactions it does not seem to satisfy the people on social media and the young Kenyans.

Completing the government are some former ministers from the previous cabinet, whose responsibilities have been changed: Aden Duale goes from Defence Minister to Environment, and Sopian Tuya goes the other way around; the former Minister of Tourism, Alfred Mutua, goes to Labour and in his place, at Tourism, Rebecca Miano is installed.
Former Minister of Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, will go to the Ministry of Sport and Youth, Salim Mvurya moves to Trade, while former Attorney General Justin Muturi is set to lead the Civil Service Ministry. Alice Wahome will be Minister of Lands, while Kithure Kindiki will retain her post as Minister of Home Affairs. Davis Chirchir moves from Energy to Transport.
Finally, new appointments for Stella Lagat (Gender and Heritage), Debra Mulongo Barasa (Health), Julius Migosi Ogamba (Education), Andrew Mwihia Karanja (Agriculture and Livestock Development), Eric Muriithi Muuga (Water, Sanitation and Irrigation) and Margaret Nyambura Ndung'u (Information, Communication and Digital Economy). Also noteworthy among the rejected ministers was former Malindi MP, Aisha Jumwa who occupied the Ministry of Gender and Heritage seat.
