After the November and December rains brought by the equatorial cyclone El Niño, Kenya is experiencing in the coastal regions the highest temperatures ever recorded at the turn of December and January.
As regional weather service officials warn, in some areas the thermometer has exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, a situation exacerbated by high humidity.
Specifically, the county of Tana River, north of Malindi, is in an already very serious situation, after the end of the rains that among other things caused flooding and displacement. Now the inclemency of the sun and heat, together with the high humidity, may also fatally increase cases of malaria and other tropical diseases.
The situation is milder but still 'hot' in the tourist resorts of Malindi and Watamu, where it is as high as 35 degrees during the day and the humidity has not dropped much.
Fortunately, on the seashore there is a pleasant breeze that can bring relief, but for those who live and work in the immediate hinterland the situation is already difficult. This is also the case in the Tsavo National Park, where animals may soon be suffering from the heat again, although fortunately the heavy rains have brought back food for the herbivores, which will, despite themselves, become grazing prey for the felines and other carnivores.
According to experts, temperatures will continue to rise until March, although the humidity in the air is expected to fall.
In other parts of the country, the 'baby' cyclone has not yet unloaded its last cartridges and this, in drier and mountainous areas, has kept temperatures still quite low.
In the capital city of Nairobi itself, sunny days are still cool and windy, and real summer is delayed.
