Today is a national holiday in Kenya. In fact, ‘Jamhuri Day’ is celebrated.
It is Republic Day, or the date on which Kenya's new constitution officially came into effect, on 12 December 1963, with Jomo Kenyatta as its first president, although full independence from the United Kingdom, which until then had held the reins as its colony, would come six months later, on 1 June 1964 with the entry into force of the first constitution.   
Jamhuri is the Swahili word for ‘Republic’ and since the following year, 12 December has been considered a national holiday. 
Jamhuri Day is therefore considered Kenya's most important day of celebration, with festivities being celebrated throughout the country, celebrating national unity despite the peculiarities of the different tribes and the country's cultural heritage. This year, therefore, marks 61 years of independence and 60 years of Jamhuri Day.
Consequently, government offices, banks and any business that wants to will remain closed, except for those providing essential services.
The Italian embassy and consulates in Kenya will also be closed.
The government and many of the administrations in the country's 47 counties have organised public celebrations and official ceremonies.
The national one, presided over by Head of State William Ruto, will be held in Uhuru Garden, the main park in the capital Nairobi.
