Yesterday in Italy there was the official poster for the new film by Luca Medici, aka Checco Zalone, who, as well as co-author and protagonist, for the first time is also not a director. The film, as we "Kenyans" have known for some time, is called Tolo Tolo and is considered by the producer Pietro Valsecchi the work of the artistic maturity of the box-office champion of recent years at our house. Tolo Tolo will be released in Italian cinemas on January 1 next year.
We, who met Zalone on the eve of the first shoot at Leopard Point in Malindi and said goodbye to him at the end of the shoot, know practically everything about this film, but by agreement with the production and with our friend, location manager and organizer of the Kenyan casting Antonio De Feo, we have never revealed the African details of the plot. What we have already written is that alongside the protagonist there is a boy from Mambrui, Nassir Said Birya and that Malindi and Kenya do not appear as such but on the big screen will be an indefinite African country.
Although those who know these places well can not help but identify the White Elephant, the town of Mambrui and its beach, the landscapes of the river Sabaki and the streets of Malindi, as well as many Italian residents and holidaymakers of the town and Watamu who are immortalized in some scenes.
What can be revealed of the plot is that Zalone will take a path as a migrant backwards, finding himself escaping from the African nation in which he works and crossing many situations typical of the Black Continent, before embarking as many illegal immigrants to the Italian coast.
At his side, in fact, a little black boy who will learn to swim thanks to Checco and will shout "Tolo! Tolo!" meaning "Alone!", hence the nickname.
