Traffic fines, Kenya wants to change

Supreme Court calls for introduction of instant fines

17-10-2023 by redazione

Kenya's Supreme Court has given the order to speed up paperwork for the introduction of instant traffic tickets, an institutional project long ready to go into effect but still stalled.

The initiative on the part of the government had come about to crush corruption on the roads by the authorities, one of the country's most obvious scourges, and consequently that in the justice system, which unquestionably needs more transparency, as well as streamlining in its bureaucracy still a child of British law, with double bail and punishment commuted to a penalty, but without, for example, plea bargaining.

In a statement, Chief Justice Martha Koome called on the prosecutor to prioritize reforms, noting that they are capable of streamlining and addressing systemic corruption in the criminal justice system.

"It is important to understand that no single institution can succeed alone in addressing the prevailing corruption within the criminal justice system," Judge Koome said.

The call for introduction sooner rather than later mainly concerns minor offenses, as well as a clear regulatory policy for boda-boda transportation.
For cases that escalate to criminal, however, Koome speculated on the use of alternative methods to imprisonment, such as community service and probation.
